i couldn’t find the car today
missy drove it last, on sunday
how we love our daily mysteries
how is my elbow going to feel in the morning?
what are my kids whispering about in their room all the time?
what god damn floor did we park on?
i went up and down the stairs
clicking my keys
listening for an inanimate object to announce itself
i phoned a friend
missy swears it’s on the fourth floor
my eyes disagree
i get snippy
say I’ll figure it out
hang up
and as quickly as my words began to echo
behold:
my crimson suv
obscured by a mightier van
firmly and plainly
on the fourth floor
heat rising
cursing the van driver for obfuscating my vision
how dare they park next to me
missy, while we’re here
what was she thinking?
and lest we forget eve
she wanted fruit and now i have to own a car?
at last, me
he who forgot to change the battery on the key fob
why shouldn’t it be me?
